Lunchtime Conversations - Blessings and Blind Spots
Blessings and Blind Spots
How do different traditions and streams within the life of the Church of England engage with the Holy Spirit?
What might this mean for the renewal of the church?
Join ReSource Director Christopher Landau for a series of live conversations on Zoom, on Wednesday lunchtimes in January and March, exploring these questions with a series of interviewees from across the breadth of the CofE.
Each session will begin at 1pm, with around thirty minutes of conversation between Christopher and his guest, followed by questions and input from those attending. The final ten minutes or so will be a time of prayer, using the ‘Prayer During the Day’ framework. Feel free to bring your lunch!
The Conversations will also be available afterwards on the Resourcing Renewal Youtube page.
Book your free tickets at the bottom of this page.
Questions we will be exploring with interviewees include:
What does the work of the Holy Spirit mean in the context of your tradition?
Where do you think the role of the Spirit gets most misunderstood in the life of the church?
Do you detect a nervousness about the apparent unpredictability of the Spirit?
How does the work of the Spirit relate to Anglican liturgy?
How comfortable are you with spontaneity in worship?
How do you understand the significance of the fruit of the Spirit and spiritual gifts in the Christian life?
How conscious are you of people having had negative experiences in overtly charismatic contexts?
7th January: The Revd Canon Dr Michael Leyden.
Michael is Dean of Emmanuel Theological College, which offers a wide variety of ministerial training across the north-west of England. Having served in a variety of contexts, Michael describes himself as a ‘sacramental charismatic’.
14th January: The Revd Marcus Walker.
Marcus is chair, and one of the founders, of the ‘Save the Parish’ movement. At St Bartholomew the Great in London he has overseen remarkable growth in a church that embraces history, tradition and a liturgical life rooted in the BCP.
21st January: The Revd Simon Ponsonby.
Simon is Pastor of Theology at St Aldates Oxford, and author of many acclaimed books on Christian discipleship, including More: How You Can Have More of the Spirit When You Already Have Everything in Christ.
January 28th: Dr Ros Clarke.
Ros is Associate Director of Church Society and oversees its online content. She has a PhD on canonical interpretations of the Song of Songs, holds to complementarian theology, and is a member of General Synod.
March 4th: Bishop Leah Vasey Saunders.
Leah was appointed Bishop of Doncaster in 2025, having previously been Vicar of Lancaster. She remains Chair of On Fire Mission, which promotes charismatic and Catholic renewal in the Church of England.
March 11th: Bishop Mark Tanner.
Mark is Bishop of Chester. As Patron of ReSource, he says it ‘exists to serve and seek renewal in the Spirit in every season without recourse to easy triumphalism or simplistic answers’. He is the author of The Introvert Charismatic.
March 18th: Bishop Paul Thomas.
Paul is Bishop of Oswestry, and a Forward in Faith Executive Committee member. As bishop he extends pastoral and sacramental care to 110 traditional catholic churches across the Canterbury province.
[*The conversation with Paul Thomas will be pre-recorded, and the live discussion following will reflect on his contribution and the series as a whole.]

Alive in Christ - Online
Following the success of the course in the Spring of 2025, we will be running this course again during Lent 2026.
Alive in Christ is a course for small groups, whose aim is to offer each member of the group a transforming experience of God’s love, enabling them to love and forgive others and helping them to become confident about serving God as a member of Christ’s Body.
Testimonies
“Have you ever wanted to try something different but have never been able to pluck up the courage to make that leap of faith? ‘Alive in Christ’ is a course that we encourage everyone to attend. It is perfect for anyone regardless of age, how long they have been a Christian or how strong their faith is. You have nothing to loose, and everything to gain. The course can be challenging at times but that is good. It makes you think, it helps you to address issues in your life and confirms that the love of God is all sufficient.”
“Alive in Christ is non-confrontational, there is no right or wrong, no pass or fail. You are amongst like-minded people who want to extend their learning by using the Bible, conversation, prayer and music to gain a greater understanding of how they can grow in faith and ultimately discover their role in God’s Kingdom.”
ReSource Minister Sarah Clark will be leading the Alive in Christ course online.
Renewed in Prayer, Pleshey Retreat
Renewed in Prayer
ReSource works to encourage spiritual renewal in local churches, particularly ‘little, local, ordinary’ churches. This retreat will explore a variety of approaches to prayer, with a particular emphasis on what it means for prayer to come alive through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. The work of ReSource is founded on the promise of living water for every Christian (John 7:38), and we will relate this hope to our life of prayer, reflecting also on the promise in Romans 8 that the Spirit ‘helps us in our weakness’ and ‘intercedes for us’.
“ In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. ” Romans 8: 26 - 27
Based at The Diocesan Retreat House, Pleshey, CM3 1HA

ReSource has published a new course, Together in Prayer, which is particularly designed to help encourage small group prayer, including in contexts where few people are used to praying together in small groups.
Some elements of the retreat will draw on this material, and we will encourage those on the retreat to journey together in small group prayer (whether or not this is a new adventure in prayer for you!).
Led by:
Revd Dr Christopher Landau is the Director of ReSource. Before ordination he was the BBC World Service’s religious affairs correspondent; he is the author of Loving Disagreement and has a particular desire to see the Spirit bring unity among Christians. He has previously been in parish ministry in London, and student chaplaincy in Oxford. He is Honorary Professor of Practice in Christian Spirituality at Emmanuel Theological College.
Revd Esther McCafferty spent 37 years in full-time stipendiary ministry in ‘little, local and ordinary’ churches, having originally trained as a primary school teacher. Intercession has sustained and encouraged her in tough inner city/urban situations, and she now feels called to be a blessing to others, through intercession, in renewal, discipleship and mission. She has been an Intercessor for both ReSource and the international mission agency SOMA.

Some Scriptures to inspire our prayer…
You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
I Peter 2.9,10
As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth. I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
John 17.18-23
Just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.
I Corinthians 12.12,13a

Charismatic History - Witness Seminars
Share in a series of conversations on key aspects of the history of charismatic renewal.
As part of the Charismatic Renewal History Project, ReSource is holding another series of online Witness Seminars, based around the five key themes which are emerging from the ongoing work of the project, chaired by Dr John Maiden of the Open University.
Each 90-minute seminar will begin with some initial reflections from those leading the work on that day’s theme, followed by an opportunity for sharing memories, open to anyone wishing to reflect personally on the period 1960-2000. The seminars are also open to observers with an interest in the history of renewal in this period.
These seminars provide a great opportunity to reflect on some of the key ways in which charismatic renewal impacted the church, and to consider the ongoing implications for mission and ministry today.

Equipping the Church for ‘Quiet Revival’
Catered ticket sales have now closed, but you are welcome to attend and bring your own lunch.
ReSource works for spiritual renewal in local churches – what we often call ‘little, local, ordinary’ churches. What does news of a ‘Quiet Revival’ mean in such contexts, and how might clergy and lay leaders be equipped to respond to these spiritual stirrings?
Book your place using the form at the bottom of this page.
Our keynote speaker is Revd Dr Helen Collins, author of Charismatic Christianity: Introducing Its Theology Through the Gifts of the Spirit. Helen will offer both theological teaching and practical application, focussed on what it is for the church to be renewed in the spiritual gifts that defined its early expansion.
The day will also include a variety of workshops (offering opportunities to be equipped for ministry even in the smallest or least well-resourced contexts), alongside times of prayer and worship. There will also be the offer of personal prayer ministry and anointing.
